Wrought Iron Fireplace Tools
The Finishing Touch
The care and keeping of a fireplace involves a number of functions: cleaning the hearth, adjusting the logs and stirring up the flames to name a few. To make these tasks easier, fireplace tools were invented. Made of wrought iron by the village blacksmith, the earliest of these tools were plain and purely functional.
Included in the usual set of wrought iron fireplace tools were to following items:
tongs - for lifting and adjusting the logs in the fireplace.
a poker – to keep the logs in close proximity for efficient burning
a broom and shovel – for the removal of ashes
Occasionally, as ash bucket, to carry ashes outdoors for disposal, and a bellows , to fan the flames, would be added. Later, a stand to hold these tools became a part of the set.
Modern fireplace tools are still made of wrought iron – a testimony to the durability of this remarkable metal. However, today’s wrought iron fireplace tools are as beautiful as they are functional.
