Ancient artisans were trained at length in their respective skills. The mastery of such art as calligraphy, illumination (the illustration of texts), and painting made the artist a valued member of society. At the top of the creative chain were sculptors. These men worked artistic magic, chipping away at large blocks of stone to create lifelike images of everything from gods to humans to inanimate objects. However, the process was very lengthy and the finished product was exceptionally cumbersome.
With the discovery of wrought iron, the creation of sculpted artwork took on a new dimension.Although sculpture could now be created at the forge in a relatively short amount of time, early wrought iron sculptures were rare. This was due to the fact that many items necessary for daily life were also made of wrought iron and utility took priority over adornment.
Enter the artist blacksmith. Here was an artisan who combined the skill of a blacksmith with the soul of an artist. Creative and dedicated, the artist blacksmith began to forge what has become a singular skill – the bending of heated wrought iron into objects of art.
